The Commando Welfare Trust (CWT) welcomes the release of the Royal Commission’s final report, which confirms many of the major challenges that our community of serving members, veterans and their families have been facing.
While the findings are undoubtedly difficult and uncomfortable, these issues must come to light, allowing Government, Defence and DVA to begin the essential work of implementing the recommendations.
As a not-for-profit focused on providing support to the Special Operations Command community, this report is particularly important.
Over the majority of the past 30 years, Special Operations Command has faced the majority of Australia’s close combat in the Middle East. The risks also of service in Special Operation Command with mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBI) have been mentioned in the report and will be a focus for the Commando Welfare Trust.
Given this, the CWT has also recognised that the Royal Commission found that those “who served in the permanent forces in combat and security roles in the Army are over twice as likely to die by suicide than Australian males.”
We encourage you to view the recent coverage on mTBI in The Australian and on 60 Minutes.
The CWT remains committed to supporting our community, a group of Australians who have risked their lives for our country but often fall under the radar.
We look forward to working with Defence, our partners and other organisations to ensure these recommendations lead to real, lasting change for those who have served.
We are proud to work with Australian serving members, veterans and families every day to improve their quality of life.
If you require support, know someone who needs help, or have suggestions on how the CWT can better serve our community, please do not hesitate to contact us.
